Cleodegaria "Cleo" Gutiérrez is an indigenous live-in maid in a middle-class household in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. The family's matriarch, Sofía, her husband, Antonio, grandmother Teresa, their four young children, and another maid, Adela, also live in the house. Antonio, a doctor, leaves for a conference in Quebec. It becomes clear that Sofía and Antonio's marriage is strained.
