Even if you’ve never seen a Bruce Lee movie, you know who Bruce Lee is. That’s the impact of an icon. You probably know the vague outline of Bruce Lee as a martial artist who died young and would notably caterwaul as he fought his opponents on screen. But when you make your way through Criterion’s new Blu-ray collection, Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits, you get the full picture of a man who changed action cinema forever, and the tragedy that we only saw a glimpse of what he was capable of doing. I’ve spent …
In what will hopefully be a dominoes situation, Regal Cinemas announced today that when it reopens its theaters on July 10th, it will require all guests to wear masks. Disposable masks will be made available as needed, but at this point you likely already have a mask or two of your own. If not, I’d suggest getting one—this is our new normal. The decision comes in the wake of AMC Theaters reversing course after receiving intense backlash for saying it decided not to make masks required so as to not get into a “political conversation.” Which is insane, …
AMC Theaters will reopen in the US on July 15 — and won’t require people to wear masks so as not to be “drawn into a political controversy.
Regal Cinemas is the latest theater chain to set a reopening date as this corner of the industry weathers hard financial hits amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Regal's owner, Cineworld, is behind the reopening date decision and plans to reopen theaters in the UK, too. Potential return moviegoers will also be pleased to know that, unlike the Cinemark chain, there will be plenty of new health and safety guidelines in place to protect patrons from potential coronavirus exposure. Per The Wrap, Cineworld will reopen Regal Cinemas' 546 U.S. locations on Friday, July 10. This wave of reopenings will happen …

Trolls World Tour was more profitable for Universal Pictures in three weeks on digital than the original film was after five months in theaters.
Right now, cinemas, like most other businesses, are in lockdown. Any form of entertainment that requires people to gather in a single space is on hold as we practice social distancing to flatten the curve so that hospital systems aren't overwhelmed with new patients. But since we're impatient and cooped up at home, we can't help but wonder what the world will look like post-coronavirus. We don't know how the theater industry will fare, and it's possible that it could be radically different by the time this crisis is over. For China's part, …
Once upon a time, drive-in movie theaters were all the rage before being mostly supplanted by locally owned brick-and-mortar theaters, which were then replaced by franchise cookie-cutters. But with the coronavirus pandemic forcing those apex theaters to first reduce audience sizes and then shutter their doors completely (albeit temporarily), the bygone era of drive-in movie theaters is experiencing a resurgence. If you've never been to a drive-in movie, here's how it works: It's pretty much right there in the name. You drive out to a parking lot or a field that'…

But now, as the situation regarding the coronavirus keeps changing, so too must movie theater practices. AMC Theatres, which is America's largest movie theater chain, has announced a new 'social distancing' initiative that will see the chain cut its theater capacity in half beginning on March 14, and continuing through April 30. Regal Cinemas has just enacted the same measure, as has Canadian exhibitor Cineplex, which operates nearly 1,700 auditoriums up north. Meanwhile, Alamo Drafthouse is similarly "deactivating" sections of seats. Expect other theater chains to follow suit in the coming hours. This is a necessary measure that will keep people from being stacked on top of each other, should they choose to go …
