Marlo is pregnant with an unplanned third child with her husband Drew. Their oldest child, Sarah, is neurotypical, but Jonah, their son, has a developmental disorder that doctors have been unable to diagnose; in an attempt to reduce his sensitivity to external stimuli, Marlo brushes his skin using the "Wilbarger protocol". Craig, Marlo's wealthy brother, offers to pay for a night nanny as a baby gift, partly because Marlo experienced postpartum depression after giving birth to Jonah, but Marlo rebuffs him.
