In a somewhat surprising move, HBO has decided to cancels the Stephen King series The Outsider. This despite the fact that work had already been underway for Season 2 this year in the wake of the show’s debut early in 2020. The news comes via Deadline, who reports that MRC – the studio behind the show – will be shopping The Outsider Season 2 to other outlets after HBO passed on a second season. Richard Price, the show’s executive producer, put together a script and a bible for the show’s continuation, which would center around Cynthia Erivo’s character …
If you want to get an audience's attention, you can do a lot worse than beginning with an extreme close-up on Richard E. Grant’s impossibly communicative face. With his bright blue eyes beaming against a burnt orange background, locked directly into camera – and thus, staring directly into your soul, the shot holds too still for just a few moments too long while Grant subtly shifts and seems to breathe you in through the screen. It’s an instant shortcut to unnerving the viewer and introduces them to the intimate, curious, and decidedly offbeat world of Dispatches from …
AMC has released the first few minutes of its upcoming limited series Dispatches from Elsewhere, which starts out with a solid 22 seconds of Richard E. Grant staring into your soul. This is how all television shows should start. The series, which was created by and stars Jason Segel, debuts on March 1. The clip introduces Grant as an unreliable narrator in the story of Peter (Segel), an aggressively uninteresting man living an aggressively uninteresting life at an app company in Philadelphia. (A character who puts their life in the hands of bodega sushi is already a character to keep …
AMC has released the official trailer for the upcoming anthology series Dispatches from Elsewhere, and I will give you $1,000 if you can succinctly describe the plot after watching it. The series hails from showrunner Mark Friedman, who was a writer on the short-lived series Wayward Pines and created the other short-lived NBC series Believe. The story follows four ordinary people who feel there’s something missing in their lives, and subsequently stumble onto a puzzle hiding behind the veil of everyday life. After they begin accepting the “Dispatches from Elsewhere” challenges, they find the mystery only …
Jason Segel first turned heads as an endearingly comedic actor in works like Freaks and Geeks, I Love You, Man, and How I Met Your Mother. Segel has also fostered his own unique comedic visions, writing the screenplays for Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets. But Segel's latest project, an anthology series coming to AMC, is as far away from comedy as you can get. Dispatches from Elsewhere, created by and starring Segel, comes to air in 2020. And as you can tell from the first teaser released, it's a dark, complicated, and thoroughly twisted affair. "Behind this …
The incredibly disappointing news broke today that Starz is not moving forward with additional seasons of its excellent series Counterpart. In other words, yes, it's cancelled -- although according to Deadline, the show's production company MRC is shopping it around to streaming services. So, hopefully a network like Hulu will pick it up so it will actually be seen by viewers this time -- it absolutely deserves it! (You can read my review of Season 2 here, as well as thoughts on the great episode "Twin Cities"). When Starz first picked up the series, it did so for two seasons. …
