Back in April, news broke that Paramount and Entertainment One were working on a sequel to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark with director André Øvredal set to return. Based on the popular children’s book series from Albin Schwartz, the 2019 film put the focus on a group of friends who discover a strange book with the ability to bring their greatest fears to life. That first movie gave us big screen renditions of the Pale Lady, spiders, the Toe Monster, Harold the Scarecrow and the Jangly Man, but with three books in Schwartz’s series, all with …
Aya Cash and Josh Ruben star as two writers trapped together in a cabin telling each other scary stories in the trailer for the upcoming Shudder horror comedy Scare Me. The film, written and directed by Ruben, looks like a fun meta narrative about both the genre and about working in the creative industry in general, specifically commenting on the feelings of inadequacy and resentment people often feel over the success of others. Specifically, the resentment men feel for successful women. The film follows Fred (Ruben), who rents an isolated cabin out in the woods to concentrate on writing his …

Fresh off of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, director André Øvredal is cracking open an old creaky coffin that's been gathering dust in Hollywood for years. THR reports that Øvredal is set to take on Last Voyage of the Demeter, a high seas vampire thriller—underappreciated genre IMHO—that has floated from company to company over the years before recently finding port at Amblin Partners. (For context: The last time the project surfaced, Neil Marshall was offering Viggo Mortensen the lead role in 2012.) Written in 2001 by Bragi Schut (Escape Room), the film follows the ship …

Several times throughout Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, I found myself thinking of Hobbs & Shaw. Listen, I know there's little connection to be made between a ghost-and-ghoul spookshow based on a children's book and a Fast & Furious spinoff where The Rock quite literally lassos a helicopter with a tow chain. These are very different cinematic experiences. But I kept returning to Hobbs & Shaw's set-pieces, and how batshit bananas insane they may look, there isn't much weight to that CGI-heavy madness. There's no satisfying Action Oomph™ …
