Yeri Han, star of Minari, shares how the film represents her personal experience.
Minari feels like director Lee Isaac Chung gazing into the past to recognize and empathize with the kind of hardships and sacrifices his immigrant parents had to endure.
It’s probably no surprise to hear that Minari is generating serious Oscar buzz. The drama directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring The Walking Dead veteran Steven Yeun is one of the best-reviewed films of the year (it’s currently sitting at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and holding since its debut at Sundance this past January). As reported by Variety, the film is finally getting a theatrical release, with a limited Oscar-qualifying run beginning December 11 in New York and Los Angeles. A wider rollout is set to begin February 12, with a plan to continue …
A24 has released the first trailer for the sweeping drama Minari, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the film follows a Korean-American family that moves to a small Arkansas farm in the hopes of building their own American Dream. But when their loving yet somewhat surly grandmother moves in, challenges mount that put pressure on the stability of this struggling family unit. I caught Minari at Sundance and absolutely loved it. It’s a warm, intimate family drama that also manages to be cinematic and incredibly striking. …
Lee Isaac Chung, whose upcoming film Minari earned rave reviews at Sundance, has been tapped to rewrite and direct the English-language remake of Your Name for Paramount, Toho and J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot. Abrams will produce along with Genki Kawamura, who produced the original film, while Lindsey Weber will serve as an executive producer on the project. Eric Heisserer (Arrival) and Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick) penned earlier drafts of the script, and Chung will work off of Gordon's draft. Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) was previously attached to direct. The story, which has …
This past weekend, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival announced this year's winners. While winning Sundance used to have some kind of impact (early in the 2010s, winners included Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station, and Whiplash), in recent years, the win hasn't amounted to much with the Grand Jury Prize going to movies like I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore and The Miseducation of Cameron Post. However, in 2020, Sundance chose some fine movies for its awards. The A24 drama Minari had a very good night, taking home both the Grand Jury Prize …
At first blush, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari seems like it will be an immigrant story about a Korean family moving to Arkansas to start a farm. But rather than lean heavily on how the Yi family relates to their American surroundings, Chung wisely turns the story inward to show how immigrant aspirations are woven together with family struggles. The magic of Minari is in how Chung shows that Korean and American identities blend together for a first-generation family but conflict doesn’t necessarily arise from culture or national identity. Sometimes, it’s from a husband and wife having …
Rising star Steven Yeun has signed on to play the lead in A24's Korean immigrant drama Minari, which will also mark his debut as an executive producer. Isaac Chung will direct from his own screenplay, which is inspired by his upbringing as the son of Korean immigrants in rural Arkansas. Set in the '80s, Minari will find Yeun playing a man who uproots his family to chase the American dream on a plot of farmland in Arkansas, whose official state nickname at the time was Land of Opportunity. Yeun is an immigrant himself, having been born in Seoul before …
