An idea in the original draft of the Dune screenplay would've eaten the film's entire budget according to director Denis Villeneuve.
If it's the end of October, it must be time for the annual BloodList, which highlights the most-liked unproduced screenplays and pilots in the horror, thriller, sci-fi and dark comedy genres. Created in 2009 by manager-producer Kailey Marsh, the BloodList celebrates its 12th edition this year, though Marsh is mixing things up for the 2020 edition. Rather than focus on projects that are already set up around town from represented writers, the 2020 BloodList is shining a spotlight on its Fresh Blood creators -- the unrepresented genre writers who are just waiting to be discovered. This year'…
On August 18, 1995, my life was changed forever. Mortal Kombat, a feature film based on a wildly popular and wildly controversial ultra-violent fighting video game, was released in theaters. And I saw it approximately 9,000 times. It's embedded into my brain, my heart, my soul. When I see the New Line Cinema logo, I immediately scream "MORTAL KOMBAT!" as a Pavlovian response. It's a special, personal film. And in celebration of its 25th anniversary, I thought I'd explain why it works so well, starting with the basics: Its tight, simple, effective, thrilling, and surprising …
Edgar Wright is incapable of making a bad movie, and a potential next project for the Baby Driver filmmaker sounds downright incredible. While Wright is currently in post-production on the psychological thriller Last Night in Soho, which is scheduled to hit theaters later this year, it appears he’s next looking to dive headfirst into a robot sci-fi story. Per THR, Wright is set to direct an adaptation of the upcoming Simon Stephenson novel Set My Heart to Five, and the logline is incredible: According to the synopsis the story is "set in an all-too human 2054," …
Dark Horse, the independent comics publisher known for original properties like Hellboy and Sin City as well as comics based on popular franchises like Aliens, is adapting the original screenplay that became 1987’s Predator into a five-part mini series beginning this summer. Judging by the inaugural issue’s cover image, the adaptation is going with the titular alien’s original design as briefly portrayed by Jean Claude Van Damme, and this excites me to no end. The comic, by Jeremy Barlow, Patrick Blaine, and Andy Owens, is based on the 1984 screenplay Hunter by Jim Thomas and John …
James Gunn revealed which of his screenplays is his favorite, and to the surprise of many, it wasn't Guardians of the Galaxy.

You may or may not be aware that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are Oscar-winning screenwriters, yet have only written one film together. Until this year, that is. While the two took Hollywood by storm with 1997’s Good Will Hunting, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in the process, in the wake of that success the duo carved out extremely successful careers onscreen—and in Affleck’s case, behind the camera as a director, which earned him a Best Picture Oscar for Argo. But while Damon co-wrote the 2012 film Promised Land and Affleck wrote or …
Ah yes, the end of October. A time for tricks, a time for treats, and a time for the BloodList, which highlights the most-liked unproduced screenplays and pilots in the horror, thriller, sci-fi and dark comedy genres. Created in 2009 by manager-producer Kailey Marsh, the BloodList celebrates its 11th edition this year -- and just in time for Halloween! Roughly a quarter of the scripts that have appeared on the BloodList have gone on to be produced, including Arrival, Birdbox, The Shallows, The Voices and The Blackcoat's Daughter. Recent BloodList projects The Other Lamb and We Summon …
Quentin Tarantino has an entirely unique screenwriting method. When he’s writing dialogue, he says, he simply gets his characters talking and lets them tell him where each scene is going. He writes scene directions as if he’s writing a novel. There’s a basic rule that screenplays are written to be seen, not read, but Tarantino writes his scripts to be read. He doesn’t stop writing until he’d be happy to stop at the script and just publish that as the only form the story is told in.
