A Disney animated short is making the jump from virtual reality to Disney+.
One of the more unexpected joys of Disney’s Frozen 2, which would go on to become the highest grossing animated feature of all time, was how well it deepened and expanded the mythology and mystery of the Frozen world. But a new book looks to explore those mysteries more fully. Ahead of this weekend’s virtual edition of Frozen Fan Fest (which will include, amongst other things, a trailer for the upcoming Olaf-centered short film “Once Upon a Snowman”), we are so thrilled to bring an exclusive excerpt from Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets: The Story of Iduna and …

Marc Smith has a storied history at Disney Animation. He began work as an intern at the Florida animation satellite studio, housed inside the Magic of Disney Animation attraction at what was then a young Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), working as a in-betweener on Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, before graduating to a full-fledged animator on Hercules and Tarzan. After Chicken Little, he moved to the story department for Tangled, eventually becoming director of story on Frozen 2. Frozen 2, of course, wound up being the biggest animated movie of all time, …
Disney’s Frozen 2 is currently the biggest animated film of all time. And it’s easy to suspect that something so widely and instantaneously accepted, the world over, appeared one day, fully formed and ready for box office and pop-cultural dominance. But that’s not how it works. Making any Disney animated feature is a years-long process full of ups and down, snowy peaks and icy valleys, and all of that drama is captured exquisitely in the new Disney+ documentary series Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2. (All six episodes debut this week.) Through six episodes, you …
Disney+ isn't just home to great Disney movies, but great movies about Disney.
The making of a Disney animated film is, for the most part, a long and arduous process, full of false starts, speed bumps, and creative dead-ends. Sure, the end result is almost always magical, but the journey to get there is anything but. But with the new Disney+ series Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, filmmaker Megan Harding attempts to make a really-for-real behind-the-scenes documentary, as is evidenced by the brand-new trailer. The trailer emphasizes the …
When Frozen was released back in 2013, it was far from a sure thing. The marketing was awkward and clunky, hiding the fact that it was a big, Broadway-style musical like the classics from the Disney Renaissance (instead it focused mostly on snuggly snowman Olaf) and its production, which began nearly 70 years earlier when Walt Disney spit-balled ideas for a semi-animated biographical film based on the life and work of Hans Christian Andersen, was incredibly difficult. When the movie became a genuine phenomenon, everyone was caught off guard, including retailers, which turned a talking Olaf plush …
Here’s an actual good surprise for a change: Walt Disney Animation Studios released their stunning VR short “Myth: A Frozen Tale” for at-home viewing on Oculus Quest. Anyone with a headset should watch right now. It was directed by Jeff Gipson, the skateboarder poet and one of Walt Disney Animation …
