You Were Never Really Here

Joe, a war veteran and former FBI agent with post-traumatic stress disorder and a painkiller addiction, has just completed a job in Cincinnati. He heads back to New York City, where he cares for his mother in his childhood home. Joe has many flashbacks to his childhood and past in the military and FBI, detailing several traumatic experiences, such as his abusive father, witnessing a child being murdered in the Gulf War, and failing to save a large group of young Chinese girls who were killed during an FBI raid as they were being smuggled into the U.S.

Before Joe enters his house, he and the son of Angel, the man whom Joe receives payment from, see each other by chance. Later, while collecting his payment for the Cincinnati job, Angel tells Joe that he has another job offer and to go see his boss, John McCleary, as soon as possible. When he does see McCleary, Joe tells him that he wants to find a different middle-man, since both Joe and Angel's safety have been compromised by Angel's son now knowing where he lives.
